Importance of the freedom of the press [ungraded, 2002]

The freedom of the press is of major importance. Censorship is a danger to society, as demonstrated by the situation in certain countries where repressive Governments are in power. In all democratic societies, it is vital to resist efforts to gag the press, at any cost. The press has a duty to guarantee freedom of speech. The press has an informative and educational function, but runs the risk of sometimes exerting an inordinate influence. There are several examples of cases where the press is trying to interfere with people’s private lives. This is appalling, and to be avoided at all times. [^]
